Capabilities: Master Planning

Environment North has contributed to many projects that feature master planning as a key task.

Whilst such projects usually also include professional urban planners, engineers, and architects, we play an important technical role by working with these and other professionals such as transport planners, economists, recreation planners, and a range of other specialists to develop environmental planning and design solutions for large greenfield developments, usually in sensitive environments.

Our approach is that all land use planning should be values-based and that the development should, as much as possible, “come from the land”. Environmental management during construction and operation is also essential but is not a substitute for sound planning.

Some examples of our master planning work are:

  • biodiversity and recreation planning for resort developments in sensitive areas such as Cape Tribulation and Mission Beach, and including the $8.15 billion Aquis Resort at The Great Barrier Reef at Yorkeys Knob, Cairns
  • master planning and creation of development control codes (Myola Planning Study – a proposed new urban area accommodating 11,000 people adjacent to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area)
  • biodiversity and recreation planning for the proposed Edmonton Business & Industry Park that will form part of and complement the Mt Peter Master Planned Area in Cairns’ southern corridor
  • assisting Origin Energy with constraints analysis and masterplanning for its Greenlea site as part of the proposed Ironbark CSG Project
  • assisting Ports North in developing a suite of terrestrial land placement sites for dredge spoil as part of the Cairns Shipping Development Project
