EMP(C) for Torres Strait Aerodromes

Rob Roy Earthmoving

Summary

Environment North was commissioned by Rob Roy Earthmoving to develop an Environmental Management Plan (Construction) (EMP(C)) for a project that involved the resealing of three aerodromes on Coconut (Poruma), Darnley (Erub) and Murray (Mer) Islands in the Torres Strait.

The EMP(C) was developed to address the contract requirements of the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Technical Standard for Environmental Management MRTS 51.

Using practical environmental management knowledge and experience gained from years of work in the industry Environment North developed a document that took into account the small scale of the project and the remote locations with limited resources. Consultation was undertaken with the client to ensure that the document was going to be fit for purpose and protected relevant environmental aspects using realistic environmental management measures that would be acceptable to TMR.

The final document included information addressing environmental reporting, auditing and emergency response as well as providing environmental management actions for:

  • Noise and vibration,
  • Dust,
  • Water quality,
  • Erosion and sedimentation,
  • Flora and fauna,
  • Land contamination,
  • Acid sulphate soils,
  • Chemicals and fuels, and
  • Waste and site clean-up.

Innovation/Distinguishing Features

Tailor made EMP(C) for a small scale project being undertaken by a local business that includes practical enviornmental management advice and meets TMR contract requirements.
