Environment North was selected by the IFC (World Bank) to build and manage a team to determine the visitor carrying capacity of the Komodo National Park (a World Biosphere area) and develop visitor and environmental management guidelines. The team included scientists, recreation planners, and tourism marketing professionals and the overall scope included:

  • market assessment and development of a marketing strategy, and
  • an assessment of environmental impacts and recommendations for an appropriate management regime.

Innovation/Distinguishing Features

Application of “first world” recreation planning, tourism marketing, and environmental management skills to a poorly managed at-risk World Heritage Area. Compliance with IFC protocols.
