Kuranda Range Road Upgrade – Cairns to Kuranda, Far North Queensland

Department of Transport and Main Roads

Environment North has been assisting TMR in planning for the Kuranda Range Road for over a decade. This complex project involves balancing environmental, engineering and amenity criteria in developing an affordable upgrade solution. We have completed all environmental assessments and secured Wet Tropics and EPBC approvals for the major $800 m upgrade.

Due to funding limitations, this work has been deferred and we have assisted TMR in planning minor safety upgrades and associated road ecology elements, as well as assisting with “do minimum” solutions. This work was extended in 2016 into a new Link Study undertaken by AECOM with our assistance. TMR is currently reviewing this work and considering options.

Innovation/Distinguishing Features

The Impact Assessment Study won a Planning Institute of Australia Merit Award (Transport Planning) for displaying “innovative impact assessment techniques to demonstrate potential impacts and to evaluate options”.
