Mossman River Bank Stability

Cairns Regional Council

Environment North provided assistance with the assessment of river bank stability issues at the proposed and existing Mossman wastewater treatment plant. This involved:

  • project managing sub consultants to provide technical advice on river morphology,
  • providing advice on the design of erosion protection,
  • obtaining statutory approvals to take protected plants under the Nature Conservation Act (including negotiating and securing the required offsets), and
  • managing the development of an offset area management plan.

As a result of Environment North’s involvement, the full scope of bank erosion was identified and assessed in time to be able to be accommodated in masterplanning, Council expects to receive a permit to clear the protected species, and planning has advanced for an offset area for Council’s use where future protects also require offsets under the Nature Conservation Act.

Innovation/Distinguishing Features

The establishment of an offset area under the Queensland Biodiversity Offsets Policy on Council land that could be used in the future for projects that required the clearing of protected plant species under the Nature Conservation Act.
