Mt Peter Strategic Environmental Assessment – Cairns Southern Corridor, Far North Queensland

Department of Infrastructure and Planning

Environment North completed a strategic environmental assessment of the proposed Mt Peter master-planned area in the Cairns southern corridor. This assessment (under the EPBC Act), investigated the likely impact of a possible 50,000 people expected to move to the area. The master planned area is an initiative of the Department of Local Government and Planning and the Cairns Regional Council and is the result of substantial work by these organisations and a range of other Queensland Government agencies.

Our work involved an analysis of the findings of extensive site survey work to establish the environmental values of the area, the likely impacts of urbanisation on these values, and consideration of measures to limit and manage these impacts. The assessment required a detailed review of proposed planning instruments developed by the Cairns Regional Council and recommendations for enhancement.

Innovation/Distinguishing Feature

The assessment was the first of its kind in Australia involving all tiers of government and required the development of innovative ways to deal with possible impacts before full details of the actual development are known.
