Myola Planning Study - Urban Masterplanning and Planning Controls

Department of Infrastructure & Planning

Environment North worked with planners, landscape architects, and engineers to develop an urban Master Plan for a proposed township of 11,000 people next to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area near Kuranda, Far North Queensland. Work included:

  • mapping site values and constraints,
  • collaborating to create the Master Plan and associated amendments to Council’s Planning Scheme via Codes and Overlays, and
  • Developing “rules” to test the impacts of various development scenarios.

Innovation/Distinguishing Features

The Master Plan and Scheme Amendment won a Planning Institute of Australia Merit Award (Environmental Planning) for displaying “technically sound integration of ecological, land use and infrastructure planning inputs”.
